Sharing the road saves lives.

With more cyclists on the road every year, it’s more important than ever for cyclists and drivers to work together.

If you’re a driver or cyclist or both here’s your chance to tell drivers and cyclists something that might help them work together to get home safely.

What others are saying

Driver

Cyclists, don’t run red lights and stop signs.

Cyclist

Drivers, give just a little more space. Three feet of distance is the law, but even more helps.

Driver

Cyclists, I don’t want to have a crash, but I need you to travel in a predictable path and signal when you’re turning.

Cyclist

Drivers, if it takes you 5 or 10 seconds longer to get somewhere because you were waiting to pass a cyclist safely, that’s a fair trade.

Driver

Cyclists, if you’re riding at night, put lights on your bike or wear brighter clothing. If I can’t see you in the dark, it’s bad.

Cyclist

Drivers, remember that you’re riding in a multi-ton vehicle that’s faster and more protective than what I’m on.

Driver

Cyclists, please ride single file when traffic is heavy. It helps keep everyone moving and makes it easier to pass safely.

Cyclist

Drivers, a quick shoulder check before turning or opening your door can save a life. We’re closer than you think.

Driver

Cyclists, don’t weave between cars at stoplights. It makes it hard to see where you’re going next.

Cyclist

Drivers, use your turn signal early so I know if I need to slow down or move over. Communication matters.

What you need to know

Remember, the law in Oklahoma requires 3 feet or more between a car passing a cyclist and the cyclist. Many states consider a bicycle a vehicle when it’s operated on the road — that means observing red lights and stop signs.

Recent studies have shown that wearing a helmet reduces head injuries by up to 85%.

Make sure to ride with traffic. Riding alongside cars helps drivers see you and give you space.

If you’re riding in the dark, make sure to have both lights and reflectors on your bike.

Keep an eye out for drivers who are turning or backing out of driveways.

When you’re on a street with parallel parking, make sure to keep an eye out for people getting in and out of cars, or for cars that have just parked.

Drivers, make sure to check for cyclists when turning or backing out, and when you’re parallel parking, make sure to check your side and rear-view mirrors for cyclists.

1,166 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2023.

Numbers to think about

Each year, approximately 2% of fatalities resulting from motor vehicle crashes are people on bicycles.Fatal crashes for cyclists over 20 years old have quadrupled since 1975.
